Colds, Sniffles & Staying Well

We're nearly at that time of the year when the tissues come out, the sniffles begin, and someone always seems to have a cold. While we can't avoid every virus, we can give our bodies the best chance of staying healthy and resilient. Our immune system works around the clock, and the small habits we practise each day often make the biggest difference.

I once asked a doctor how he kept healthy with so many sick people in and out of his consultation room. He said 'handwashing' between each patient. Apart from washing your hands, try to avoid close contact with sick individuals, and disinfect commonly touched surfaces.

3 Simple ways to support your immunity

  • Prioritise sleep. During sleep your body repairs and strengthens its natural defences.
  • Nourish yourself. Eat plenty of colourful fruit and veg, drink lots of water, and include foods rich in vitamin C and zinc (research these).
  • Manage stress. Ongoing stress can weaken immune function, so take a few minutes each day to breathe deeply, walk outdoors, or simply pause and unwind. Try mindfulness.

You may still catch the occasional cold—that's part of life. But looking after your sleep, nutrition, movement, and emotional wellbeing can help your body recover more effectively and keep you more resilient throughout the colder months.

Consider this

We may think of colds as bad luck, but our everyday choices play an important role in how well our bodies cope with seasonal challenges. Small, consistent habits are often far more powerful than occasional bursts of healthy living.

But what if you already have a cold?

Drinking plenty of fluids thins mucus, easing congestion and coughing.

Rest is vital for your immune system to fight off the virus.

Remedies: Over-the-counter meds can alleviate symptoms, while lemon juice, honey and ginger in warm water can soothe coughs.

Inhaling steam can moisturise airways and reduce irritation. Use old-fashioned hot water in a bowl, a towel over the head, head over the bowl, inhale the steam.

Warm saltwater gargles can reduce throat pain.

And patience!

Patience is key. Allow your body the time it needs to heal, and you'll be back on your feet in no time.
