Natural Sleep

a good night's sleep - naturally

For some of us sleep is addictive, we love it, we can't wait to get to bed.   Others may regard it as losing precious time, especially if they have lots to complete in a day.  Many of us dread it, as we anticipate yet another sleepless night.

Whatever our attitude to sleep, and however long we try, or are forced to go without it, we eventually succumb to it and it takes up a lot of our time.  We sleep away about 25 years of our life.

There is nothing like a refreshing night's sleep to leave you feeling good about yourself, positive, energetic and ready to face the world.  But how often do you actually achieve this?

Sleep problems are among the most common medical complaints, with about one-third of the population considering it a serious problem in their life.  Millions of other people suffer their sleep problems in silence.

Good quality sleep is an important and necessary part of a healthy life.  It has a beneficial effect on the efficient functioning of our mind and body, and on the quality of our life.

Tiredness is linked to poor health and a poor quality of life.  Sleepiness can cause bad judgement, failure to perform well, lack of concentration, poor memory and immune system deficiency, causing increased susceptibility to infection and illness.  It can cause accidents, stress, nervousness, irritability, sadness, anger, despair, hopelessness.  It can make your features look older, troubled and haggard, your hair and skin to look dull and your body to stoop.  All in all, sleep problems are bad news.

There is not much medical information relating to sleep disorders, so doctors cannot help us much, other than giving us sleeping tablets, which eventually interfere even more with our quality of sleep and can make us feel worse.

So what can we do about it?  We can consider taking responsibility for our own health and find out more about what sleep is all about, what it does for us and what we can do to ensure that we get enough of it, but not just enough - plenty of good quality, restful, re-energising, rejuvenating and healthy sound sleep.

You may already have a general idea of what keeps you awake - depression, worry, illness, noise, snoring, heat, cold, alcohol, smoking, caffeine, eating late, feeling hungry, bad diet, no exercise, too much exercise, thirst, too much liquid at bedtime, nightmares, too much light, too much dark, uncomfortable bed, uncomfortable pillow, bad bed placement, stress, pain, medication, agitated partner.  Some of you may be able to add more to the list.

Whatever causes your sleep problem, there is a lot that you can do to solve it and get a restful night's sleep without suffering in silence or resorting to medication.
