Feng Shui Principles

Feng Shui creates healthy and supportive homes and workplaces for happy and harmonious living and working.  It does this by unblocking stuck energy in our surroundings and making it flow freely and harmoniously.  We are reflections of the type of energy which flows through our surroundings, as we cannot help but absorb this energy.  So, by creating balance and harmony in our surroundings, we create the same in our mind, body and life.

balance and harmony

An ancient Far Eastern practice, some 5000 years ago, Feng Shui spread to the Western world during the 1980s, where people are now focusing on the totality of mind, body and spirit for health and well-being.  Feng Shui works with the same principles as many other traditional healing methods, such as reflexology, shiatsu and acupuncture - chi energy and meridians.

feng (wind)

Feng Shui means 'wind' and 'water'

shui (water)

Feng Shui (pronounced foong shway) means 'wind and water', the two most powerful forces of nature.  The ancient Chinese studied how 'wind' - invisible energy, can affect 'water' - visible matter.

key concepts

There are certain essential concepts which must be thoroughly understood and applied in good feng shui practice.  Each one has an individual energy and a powerful influence on our surroundings and consequently on us.  Imbalance in any one of these can cause us problems.  It can affect our health, daily well-being, energy levels, clarity of  mind, decision-making, relationships, opportunities and progress in life.

chi

A balanced flow of positive chi (universal life force) is all important in feng shui, as chi flows around and through everything.  The movement and quality of chi therefore affects everything.  Feng shui aims to balance the flow of chi and optimise its quality.  Stagnant, blocked or harmful chi can affect our emotions and behaviour, leading to problems in all aspects of our life.

Sheng Chi is healthy chi which must be enhanced and maintained.  Sheng Chi is pleasing to our senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell and feelings.   Sha chi is harmful chi which must be eliminated.  Sha chi can come from pointed corners and edges, tall menacing objects, piles of clutter, and anything which is unpleasant to our senses.

Sheng Chi can be likened to a gently flowing stream, meandering through the property, creating health and harmony wherever it flows.  If anything interrupts or blocks its flow, it turns into sha chi, which begins creating dis-ease and disharmony.  Clogged up energy in your surroundings creates clogged up energy in your mind, body and life.

yin and yang

Yin and yang is the basis of the Far Eastern understanding of the universe - the Tao (the way) - that nothing exists without its opposite - heaven and earth, body and soul, light and dark, cold and hot.  When they are in balance, harmony is achieved.

When applying feng shui to a property, it is important to achieve a good yin-yang balance in materials, colours and shapes.  It is also important to decide what activity is going to take place in each room, so that you can select more yin decor, for instance in a bedroom, or more yang decor in a dining-room.

the five elements

From studying the beauty and balance of nature, the ancient Chinese discovered that there were invisible energies working in the environment.  They discovered the influence of five elements - water, wood, fire, earth, metal, which combined to create, destroy or manipulate the energy in the environment.  By studying the seasons and movement of the sun, each element was associated with a compass direction, and each of the eight compass directions  related to a person’s life areas of health, finances, relationships, career, self-development, creativity, success and opportunities.

When applying the five elements to the property, it is important to know which fabrics, colours, shapes and designs belong to which Element and what sort of energy they produce.  The interaction of the five elements through their cycles of production and destruction is what creates positive or negative energy.  Each element supports another element.  Each one also destroys another.  It can also weaken the energy of another element.  A good understanding of the five elements is a powerful tool for manipulating subtle energy to make it healthy and supportive.

eight compass directions

The dual qualities of yin and yang are expressed either as a solid line (yang) or a broken line (yin).  In sets of three, these lines produce eight different combinations of yin and yang, known as the eight trigrams.

Collectively, the trigrams represent the trinity of the universe - heaven, earth and man. Each trigram represents a natural energy and has several sets of meanings, all providing a significant key to the correct practice of feng shui.  Each trigram also relates to a compass direction.

The trigrams are placed around the pa kua, which is this familiar eight-sided symbol.  By placing the pa kua symbol over a plan of the property, it can be divided into eight sectors, North, South, East, West, SouthEast, SouthWest, NorthEast and NorthWest.  The eight sectors of the pa kua relate to an area of a person's life -  health, wealth, opportunities, relationships, family, children, new beginnings, fame, mentors, education, business, career, self-development and so on.  The trigrams then begin to reveal the different energies surrounding a person's home and life.

plus some common sense!

Once feng shui principles have been mastered, common sense can also play a big role.  For instance, energy can be created by what something represents

One of our clients had two enormous crossed swords on the wall in the centre of his home and could not understand why he kept breaking bones.  His wife felt that her life was in shreds and she could not settle in her home.

The centre of a property is all-important because the energy here expands into all other compass sectors.  So these people were having their energy chopped around by the knives.

Pictures also create a particular energy.  One of our clients, a lonely, divorced lady was in desperate need of a companion.  In her sitting-room she had mainly pictures of lonely scenes with no people in them.   One picture, in prime position, showed a solitary lady with her back to the room, looking out onto a barren landscape.

Clutter creates stuck, stale energy.  If it takes root in a particular compass direction, it could mean things becoming stuck in that life area.  Clutter in North could be stopping your career taking off.  In SouthWest, it could be creating problems with your relationships.  In East, your energy and vitality could take a dive.

A mirror doubles everything, including that untidy desk, batch of bills or pile of clutter.  If a mirror reflects your bed, you are introducing more people into your relationship.

Be aware of where you position your family photographs.  Do you want the input of your family in your bedroom all night?  Do you want your children to take over your life?

Are you feeling a bit lonely and isolated?  What is happening around your main entrance?  Is the front door almost covered by plants?  Is there an unwelcoming picture in your hall, like a fierce animal or an historical battle?
